Christmas Charity Concert (Supporting Cancer Research UK)

December 3rd saw Derwent Brass performing their annual Charity Christmas Concert at the popular Landau Forte Theatre, Derby, in aid of the Cancer Research UK (CRUK). As in previous years, the band was once again joined by the Dalesmen MVC, and their music team, who have built a strong relationship with Derwent Brass over the years.

The concert provided a mixture of general festivity including 'An English Christmas’ a triptych based on familiar English carols, a Christmas Suite, Troika, ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’ featuring both band and choir and also ‘Candle Light Carol’ a beautiful piece featuring the band’s principal cornet player Dave Neville.

For many though, the highlight of the night was a hilarious take on ’12 Days of Christmas’ arranged by the band’s Musical Director Keith Leonard. For this special rendition the audience were split into several choirs and were invited to sing the different sections and choruses of the piece. This proved more difficult than originally thought!

The Dalesmen added their unique touch to a well know Christmas repertoire as well, with an interesting rendition of Brahms’ famous 'Lullaby'.

Before the band and choir commenced the second half of the concert, a raffle was undertaken to raise more much needed funds for the Cancer Research UK charity as well as a presentation by the Chairman of the Derbyshire Committee to CRUK, Percy Rogers, to reiterate where the funds go and how they get spent.

Earlier in the year, Derwent Brass performed another concert (Spring Charity Concert) at Landau Forte Theatre, in aid of the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team (BRTM) and during this Christmas Concert presented a cheque for £400 to their chairman Roger Bennett.

Another presentation followed this, but this time on a more personal note to the band. Their Patron, Mr Roy Poole has organised these charity events for several years, originally in aid of the 'Friends of the Nightingale MacMillan Unit' and for this cause alone working with the band raised over £28,000. Due to health issues Roy will now be taking a back seat in organising these events, but the band could not let the opportunity go to formally thank Roy for his incredible work over the years. In doing so they presented him with gifts of wine and crystal glasses, but most thoughtfully to honour Roy's work by naming all future annual charity concerts - 'The Roy Poole Annual Charity Concert.' Derwent Brass thank Roy for all his hard work over the years and are certainly very proud to have him as one of their Patrons.

The band finished the concert with their famous Christmas encore item ‘Joy’, following Paul Lovatt-Cooper's 'Christmas Finale' to bring to a close another fine evening of music making. Following tradition the audience were invited to vote for next seasons nominated charities, the concerts for which will take place in both the spring and winter.
