Derwent Brass has commissioned a new work by Matthew Eden for their upcoming Christmas season.
Derwent Brass has commissioned a new work from the pen of their Associate Composer Matthew Eden for the band’s upcoming Christmas season. ‘Songs of the Angels’ is the latest instalment from Matthew, the former Black Dyke Young Composer in Residence, who has now written several pieces for the band including ‘Meditation’, ‘Pulse’ and ‘Emeritus’. His works have also been recorded and performed by a wide array of other artists, including The Hallé Orchestra and Foden’s Band.
“'Songs of the Angels' is a work I have wanted to write for some time. It was first conceived as a short festive fanfare nearly 2 years ago, but it has organically evolved into the much larger piece that it is now. It has been a little while since I’ve written for brass band, and it’s great to be returning to the medium with a substantial work such as this one.
It is based on two central Christmas themes: the Sussex Carol, and all too often overlooked Wexford Carol, and provides a real technical challenge for the musicians. I really wanted to write something that was unashamedly festive, but nonetheless modern and distinctive, and after many revisions and rewrites I am pleased with the result. As always, I am delighted to be working once again with Derwent Brass, who continue to excel themselves both musically and creatively with everything they do.
Having been the band’s Associate Composer for around 5 years now, it remains a thrill to have such a capable, enthusiastic, and welcoming group at my disposal. I am looking forward immensely to their performances of 'Songs of the Angels' this December.” (Matthew Eden)
The world premiere of the work which spans c.12 minutes will take place on Friday 8th December in Derby Cathedral in a massed bands concert alongside the Derby Central Salvation Army Band. It is anticipated to be published for wider public release in 2024.
